The People's Plas, Machynlleth
READ BACKGROUND CONTEXT TO FILM:
In 1947 the 7th Marques of Londonderry left the Plas mansion and its ground to the District Council of Machynlleth for "the perpetual use and enjoyment of the inhabitants of this town and district". But since the 'Celtica' visitor centre closed in March, the building has been standing empty and largely unused.
The Council invited organisations and groups to submit proposals for the future use of the building. One such proposal, put together by the 'Plas Steering Group' grew out of extensive surveys and consultations with the local community and enjoys widespread popular support. But it was subsequently leaked that the County Council felt that it would be within its rights to sell the building privately should this be the most financially attractive option.
This film was made to give the Council an idea of the breadth of support and enthusiasm for the community proposal and the sense of loss that would be felt if the Plas building were to be sold privately. It is edited entirely of footage shot on the 25th of June, at an event designed to give the community the opportunity to explore the local proposal and offer feedback. Residents of the town and district were invited to speak to the camera in our "Big Other Diary Room" about their hopes for the future of the building.
To date (Dec 2006) the Council still have not reached a decision about the future of the Plas Building.
