Derry: 30th January 1972
Before the armed struggle, catholics were denied basic human rights such as a vote. There was discrimination in local government to prevent catholics from recieving housing or jobs. The Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association was set up to give catholics basic human rights. In January 1971 14 NICRA members were shot dead by the British Army in what would come to be known as Bloody Sunday.
